A Day in the Park:
Disaster Preparedness

11-12-05

Our day in the park began with a continental breakfast, followed by a “Historical Overview of the Irish Wolfhound” presented by Mrs. Cheryl Rice. Mrs. Rice was kind enough to share the history of our beloved breed, presenting the history of the hound up to World War II. Future “Educational Seminars” promise more historical topics, and highlights of the advancement of the Irish Wolfhound Breed up to and through more modern times.

In the far back, is Kelly Cromer, Sue and Pat Latunski, Sadie Heller, and Nancy Angel. The IW the closest is "Wunjo" modeling her Christmas collar.

IWAWC would like to thank Mrs. Rice for a most enjoyable presentation which served as a perfect introduction for new “students of the breed”. It is comforting to have those “long in the breed” revisit its history. No matter how many times you’ve read it, or heard it, it never gets old… We ALL remain students of the breed!

The day was full of educational and performance events. The “Disaster Preparedness Course,” unique to IWAWC, was completed by 16 hounds and their owner/handlers, receiving their “Certificates of Completion” at the end of the day.

Ms. Gloria Stratford gave an informative disaster preparedness talk, reminding us “not to store water containers (plastic) directly on concrete, as it creates a toxic affect to the water very quickly”. The Disaster Preparedness Handbook contained pertinent information to which data presented at our “Days in the Park” may be added. This is a subject that will be revisited in future events to keep us all current on how to be prepared for any situation. IWAWC thanks Ms. Stratford for an informative eye view of what is needed to survive disaster with our hounds.

AKC RALLY Judge Vita Allison gave us a great overview of the sport, and several of the hounds walked though the course with their owners, who interpreted the signs as they went. Rally allows you to talk to your hound and coax them with your voice. It makes for a very relaxed obedience like event with your hound. All of the hounds had smiles on their faces for this most interesting and fun course.

We are anticipating forming an “O’RALLY ACTION TEAM”, it promises to be fun and relaxing; contact Alexis Montgomery or myself, Marian Temple, to sign up for this teamwork that promises a be a lot of fun.

C.G.C. was demonstrated by Alexis and “Wunjo”, with Pat Cobb narrating the teams’ progression thru the required steps. AKC C.G.C. Judge Mr. Bill Kasper certified 8 Irish Wolfhounds, who complete the course successfully. His comments were very positive about the hounds and their handlers. It was nice to have a showing of owners who had spent the time or just had naturally obedient hounds. It was a great experience.

The raffle brought the perfect ending to the “Day in the Park” with the “golden” item a spa treatment donated by Topper’s mom and dad, Illja and Caj. I know the winner was thrilled and am sure she has already enjoyed her win. How was it Sue?

It was a great day. We are grateful to Patti Revoir for her tireless work on the “Disaster Course” and for making it safe for the hounds and owners. It was a huge success. A thanks for the tirelessness of those who donate time and everything else it takes to put a successful day together to help further educate hound owners. The goal was reached, and everyone left wanting more!

Last note: We opened our day to any and all. We were fortunate enough to have two non wolfhound families in attendance, one with a German Shepard Dog, and the other with an Akita, both well behaved. They also participated in our courses and enjoyed their day with us and the hounds -- after all it is for the dogs.

A special thank you to all who stayed behind to help break down and help pack the vehicles and special thanks to Pat Latunski.

That’s it for now, until our next event, possibly “A DAY AT THE MOVIES”? Watch for our announcements here on our website and in the IWAWC Newsletter.
